The Wild and Verdant Garden celebrates the significant work of Nancy Friese (American, b. 1948). Nancy’s 45-year career as a painter and printmaker is the focus of our 2025 IPFDA booth installation in the historic Park Avenue Armory.
Visitors will be greeted by architecture that leads them into a garden-inspired space filled with Friese’s three new large-scale etchings with spit bit and hand coloring, as well as white-line woodcuts and lithographs specifically designed for our IFPDA booth.
Working throughout her career as a landscapepainter and printmaker, Friese has been invited to numerous nature preserves and arboretums across the United States, France, and Japan. Her ability to capture nature in these treasured and conserved locations is unique and remarkable.
We are pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Nancy Friese’s work at the Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme, Connecticut opening in June 2025. Currently, Friese is The Garden Conservancy of America’s first Artist-in-Residence and a selection of her paintings may be viewed at The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York, NY.
Nancy Friese received her BS from the University of North Dakota (1970), and her MFA from Yale University (1980). In 2011, Nancy Friese was elected as an Academician to the The National Academy in New York. Friese's work is held in numerous public and private collections including the Boston Public Library, MA; Florence Griswold Museum, CT; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Muscarelle Museum of Art, VA; Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA; the New York Public Library, NY; North Dakota Museum of Art, ND; the RISD Museum, RI; and the Yale University Art Gallery, CT, among many others.
