Cade Tompkins Projects is pleased to announce a new exhibition of sculptures by Nick Hollibaugh. Between You and Me is Nick Hollibaugh’s second solo exhibition of new work at Cade Tompkins Projects. Earlier work, shown in his first exhibition at the gallery in 2010, embraces the simplicity of Shaker furniture as well as the houses, barns and silos of his native Indiana. The work has subtle shifts in color proportionally painted on wood. In both this early work and more recent sculptures, Hollibaugh’s finely tuned aesthetics begin with the process of specifically measured strips of ash wood, exactly one inch in width.
Hollibaugh’s new work, however, breaks free of the even tones of paint on the surface. Here, expressive landscapes and clouds appear, as well as soft colors and variations from one strip of wood to the next. A counter balance to the rigor of the wood strips is a newly structured surface consisting of multiple, intertwined small twig-like sticks which are reminiscent of a bird’s nest in Sorbet Skyline or a bridge as in Hollow Note. A new element all together is the use of found wood, in this case an old school desk, which is featured with all its imperfections in Little Matinee.
