This pivotal work helped hone my artist vision. Using stencils and spray paints, I painted my aunt’s portrait multiple times. The act of using paint markers to outline her face and some parts of her body revealed what’s possible with line and gesture at the time and paved the way for me to experiment with other processes. It also revealed how other material, such as rhinestones, could be used. Overall, this early work made me see that painting was more than just paint on canvas.
