Nature in rural Virginia inspires allegories, mythologies, folktales and memory. While much of my work is about people inhabiting interior spaces, nature allows me to explore broader themes of identity, ancestry, family and home. Neither portraits nor landscapes, I like to think of Lawrenceville Landscapes #1 & 2 as experience-scapes. Heavily material-based but richly layered with meaning, these works still carry the message of Black families and Black communities, and the vitality of Black lives.
