Although Lawrenceville Landscape Series #1 & 2 are not figurative paintings, they nonetheless present narratives about African American life, lifestyle, and culture that resonate with remembrance and commemoration as they explore broader themes of identity, ancestry, family, home, and nature. Nor are they traditional landscapes, but representatives of overgrown, verdant bucolic gardens imbued with emotional and psychological terrains found at any specific place in rural Virginia. In other words, they are not about one place but any and every place, throughout time. Just as the upholstery and wallpaper designs are inspired by these lush places of nature, I am inspired by their mystery and beauty. The forest and gardens behind my mother’s house were another source-material for the pattern and design arrangements highlighted in my works.
